I do some of my best thinking walking around the lakes near where we live in Dubai. I get there at least once a week.

On one of those walks I was sitting with a question that had been bothering me for a while. How do I get people to leave a coaching session with something they can keep working with on their own, rather than just the answer they walked out with?

The answer someone leaves with solves today. It rarely solves the next thing, or the thing after that. And if all I have given someone is an answer, I have made them dependent on the next session rather than capable between sessions.

So, like most good questions, mine reshaped itself as I walked. How do I empower people to coach themselves?

That is the question I stayed with. It changed how I work, because coaching yourself is not about having the answers. It is about learning to stay with the right question long enough for the answers to come.

I unpack the whole idea in a conversation on the Muhami podcast. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eumZpVvj
