"The answer is a snapshot. The question is a living orientation."

"The answer is a snapshot. The question is a living orientation."

It hadn't failed. It was never built to last. An answer addresses one configuration of a problem, at one moment, under one set of circumstances. It's accurate for exactly as long as nothing changes. And things always change.

"The answer is a snapshot. The question is a living orientation."

I wrote that line after watching the same thing happen with client after client. Someone arrives with a good answer, one that fits their situation perfectly. Weeks later, the situation shifts, and the answer no longer fits. They come back slightly confused, as if the answer had failed them.

It hadn't failed. It was never built to last. An answer addresses one configuration of a problem, at one moment, under one set of circumstances. It's accurate for exactly as long as nothing changes. And things always change.

A question, held properly, doesn't have that limitation. It doesn't need to be right for one moment. It stays alive enough to find what's right in each new moment as it arrives.

This is part of why I ask people to stay with a question rather than rush to resolve it. Not because answers are unimportant, but because the question underneath is what keeps producing good answers, long after the first one has stopped working.

If there's a question you keep answering and then having to answer again, it might be worth staying with the question itself for once.
